The pluses and minuses of understating one’s income on a tax return include, on the plus side, one’s tax bill will be smaller. But, on the minus side, such an understatement is a crime with serious consequences.
Having enjoyed the pluses, Walter C. Pruchnik Jr., of Winter Garden, Fla., now contends with the minuses and faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to income tax evasion. According to court records, Pruchnik owed substantially more federal income tax for the calendar years 2007 through 2010 than he declared on his income tax returns. In 2007, for example, Pruchnik said his income was just $66 when he in fact earned $198,713 that year.
